Climate Disruption 101 – the basics
There are several hours of watching and learning time here. Take it a bit at a time. I suggest to you that if our civilization is at stake, it is worthwhile for all inhabitants of the planet to spend a few hours getting more informed about the situation we now face. The planet will go on – it is our society, our civilization, and our children’s lives (unto the nth generation) that are at stake.
Good brief intro: What We Know about Climate Change
Peter Sinclair (greenman3610) provides a superb series of short videos on various aspects of CD. See Climate Denial Crock of the Week.
Earth: The Climate Wars – Three 1- hour documentaries (3 hrs) This excellent production by BBC, aired in December 2009, gives a very good overview of scientific development in the field of climate research over the last 50 years.
Greg Craven, a science teacher in Oregon, posted The Most Terrifying Video You’ll Ever See, asking “What’s the worst that could happen?”, and “Is it worth the risk?”. His video went viral, and he posted a number of others, very good and quite humorous. See ManPollo.org for an organized index, or Greg’s channel on YouTube – WonderingMind42. Multiple videos here, and all worth watching.
The Real Problem
Climate Disruption is actually just a symptom of the real problem! This very excellent presentation of some simple arithmetic is a basic pre-requisite to better understanding the global challenge we face, of which the climate crisis is a major aspect, but not the only component.
The video was produced in 2002 at University of Colorado in Boulder. Some of the material is slightly dated, but that in no way changes the arithmetic or the message. It is also somewhat “USA-centric”! The implications, however, are truly global in scope.
(Viewing note: Please watch the 8 segmented parts of the video. The link to the “one-hour streaming video” does not include Dr. Bartlett’s presentation material, which shows excellent examples, and is essential to proper understanding.)
Arithmetic, Population and Energy – a talk by Dr. Al Bartlett (80 min total)
Back to the Climate
“Unchained Goddess“ – Awareness of the greenhouse effect is not new in science. Just for fun, here is a very short clip from the well known educational documentary produced in 1958 by Frank Capra for Bell Labs for their television program “The Bell Telephone Hour.” [Ed. I remember seeing the original movie – about the sun – in school!]
Additional good short videos on aspects of climate disruption are presented on YouTube by Potholer54 and Peterdcarter46. I recommend watching them all. They treat different aspects in different ways, which helps reinforce and deepen understanding of the problem(s).
Where is this taking us?
It really is happening.
– James Balog: Time-lapse proof of extreme ice loss – Spectacular – Scary!! (21 Min) (2007)
– Stephen Schneider on Climate Tipping Points
We’re in this for the long haul – Irreversible Warming – (Jan 2009)
And we’ve known about it for a long time – Steve Schneider’s Global Warming Warning 30 years ago!
30 years ago, in 1979, Dr Stephen Schneider, now an eminent Professor of Climatology, warned about Global Warming. It’s taken politicians that long to take this issue seriously — and we’re still waiting!
More materials are available on additional pages of Climate101. For now, let’s conclude CD 101 with an interesting scenario:
Earth2100 – full movie – ABC (US) production aired Jun 2, 2009 (2 hrs) (It really should be titled “USA2100”, but then that seems to be the American perspective – )
[Update 2011.02.13 – Unfortunately, this ABC production is no longer accessible on-line – if you find a link, please let me know!]
